Bratati was born to Maya and Manjul Kumar Bandyopadhyay, in Kolkata. She could remember around 300 odd nursery rhymes at the age of three as her parents recalled. She grew up with melodies, rhymes and tunes – her mother was a trained Rabindrasangeet singer and her father had a passion for literature. In her teens, Bratati came in touch to the legendary theatre personality Shambhu Mitra, who was also an eminent elocutionist, through a letter that gave her a new direction.

Poetry is the only life got, the only work done, the only pure product and free labor of man, performed only when he has put all the world under his feet, and conquered the last of his foes. - Henry David Thoreau
