Dream Realised

Bratati had a dream of taking poetry to every corner of the country. She wished to take poetry from the elites to common people, from proscenium to day to day life. She thought if people could be moved to poetry first through listening to recitations, and then through reading books. With her strong desire and passion, she could make her dream come true. She can be heard not only in an auditorium full of elites but also in a roadside tea stall of a village.

With her dream to spread the poetic works in the mass and youngsters, she set up Kabyayan, the school for practicing elocution, in 1990. The objective of the school is not only to train people the skill of recitation but also to make people learn the joy of reading poetry. With a humble start with five students, the institute now nurtures more than 800 students of all ages. Regular classes are held in Golf Green, Tollygunge (housed in Naba Nalanda High School), Salt Lake, Sonarpur, Baltikuri, Baidyabati, Chuchurah and Srirampur. Special courses are also held in Nehru Children’s Museum. Bratati along with her senior students also conducts classes on elocution in the schools run by the Techno India Group.

Poetry is not a turning loose of emotion, but an escape from emotion; it is not the expression of personality, but an escape from personality. But, of course, only those who have personality and emotions know what it means to want to escape from these things. - T.S. Eliot
